ERI Printers

Introduction

Printing at ERI is supported by several printers on the floor (see printers below). Printing output is in support of scientific research, not for classroom instruction or other non-ERI pursuits. Printing at ERI is a privilege and if abused, the IT team reserves the right to 'lock down' the printers and turn to an accounting based printing model. If a person has a personal printing need, please report the usage and number of pages printed to Kris Duckett in the Purchasing Office. Cost is six cents per page.

Current Printers for normal desktop use

ERI has 4 active printers on the floor. The admin office printers, swift and magpie, are dedicated for their use due to privacy/confidentiality issues.

https://wiki.eri.ucsb.edu/sysadm/Printing_usage_stats Includes historical printing stats info and retired printers info

Mac printing

Open up:

  • Settings
    • Hardware: Print and Fax
      • click on the + sign, this opens up Add Printer menu
  • click on IP
    • Protocol HP Jet Direct
      • Address: printer name, e.g, timber.eri.ucsb.edu click Add to finish

Discovering printers

Macs use SLP to "discover" local printers on the subnet that your computer is connected to. Printers found show up in the "Default" section of the "Print & Fax" System Prefs Panel.

Adding a printer on another subnet

You will need the following information:

  • DNS name or an actual IP address
  • the printing protocol(s) supported
  • and possibly a printer model…

Once you have the above information:

  • Open system prefs
  • Click on "Print & Fax"
  • Click on "+" sign at the bottom of left pane
    • NOTE you may need to unlock the pane first by clicking on the lock symbol at the bottom left..

Once you get the Add Printer window up:

  • Select IP pane from top
  • Select the protocol
  • Type in the address
    • it should say "Valid and complete address" below that entry once you are done typing
  • you can leave the queue blank
  • wait for "Print Using: " line to finish its auto select.
    • If it comes up with the right printer model, just click Add
    • If not, click that select and pull down to "Select Printer Software"
      • navigate to the printer model
      • Click Add

Windows 7 Printing

We've had trouble with adding printers in Windows 7--the auto network discovery does not pick up any of the printers on the floor except 1 Admin Office printer.

To add a printer:

  • Start Panel
  • Add Device or Printer
  • Add Network Printer
    • Search printer (the printer will not show up)
    • Click on the printer I want is not listed here
  • Add a printer using a TCP/IP address
    • hostname (use the IP)
    • port name (use printer short name)
  • Device type Standard (click arrow button to get HP Jet Direct
    • Detecting driver model, when you get the list
    • HP - choose model of driver (sometimes you will need to click on Run Windows Update button to get the full list, this can take minutes)
  • name the printer
  • print test page
  • go into an app or browser as if to print a page and be sure the Duplex mode is turned on for the printer

Repair/Maintenance

We typically use Brandon at Laser Cartridge Company (800-888-4871‎)

However, Brandon does not work on Xerox/Phaser printers, try X-Tech Systems Goleta 968-5788 (turns out they don't service xerox/phaser)
