XRDP and Jupyter
Using a remote desktop/XRDP to connect to an HPC desktop and then run jupyter in the browser for a long running job is becoming a common use case.
OVERVIEW
connect to the desktop with XRDP.
open Firefox and then logging into jupyter.
If you are on hpc-01, it makes sense to connect to jupyter on that computer. For hpc-01 you would use this link:
You can run your long running code, and disconnect from the remote desktop and then connect later to see how it's going or if it's done.

FIREFOX FIX
Once thing regarding Firefox on the HPC desktop: The icon on the bar on the left is what is broken. If you go into the applications grid icon (3x3 box of squares on the bottom left) and open that, then find Firefox in the second window window and launch it that will work. You can drag it from here to the bar on the left for easier access. Also, you can remove the broken one by right clicking on it and selecting remove. Apologies - we're working on a general fix.
XRDP REMOTE DESKTOP
As of now, only hpc-01.grit.ucsb.edu and hammer.eri.ucsb.edu support XRDP, but both of these should work for this purpose.
DATA
The desktop by default should be able to see your home directory. or project folders.
OTHER NOTES
To change to a specific project directory in the Desktop window file browser, in the top bar type ctrl+l (lower case L), and the will let you type in a directory instead of havng to browse around.
